April Northern News

Upcoming Dates:

Deadline for early membership renewal, May 17th

Icebreaker Social, May 17th

Tea Cup Race, May 24th

Hi everyone summer is almost here and your new executive is up and running and have put together a busy schedule of events for the summer. Many thanks to all who participated in our Annual Business Meeting on March 27th, 2008. Your new executive for the 2008 season is:

Stewart Anderson - Treasurer

Kevin Booth

Chris Boutcher – Rear Commodore Racing

Rod Boychuk

Rob Eby - Commodore

Sharon Flood – Secretary

Jeff Greene – Past President

Nicole Kirouac Luke

Ann Peikoff

Paul Van Gils - Safety

Bill Whitehead – Cruise Week

You will notice that we have a few executive members with no specific titles detailed beside their names; one of the things that we want to accomplish this year is to discuss changes to the board to be reflective of the current direction of the yacht club and technology. When that charter of the club was put together many years ago, email and the internet did not exist. As a board we want to examine and propose changes to the executive to be more reflective of today’s needs.

One of the changes the yacht club is planning this year is to focus on more “in harbour” social events vs. on the water events. In this we plan to provide a calendar of events that has wide appeal to all boaters at Northern Harbour and not just sailors. We plan to keep events open to non members. Members of NYC will be able to attend events free of charge for 2 adult members and all children under 12, for non-members and guests we plan to ask for a donation at the door to cover meal and other costs. The donation idea worked well last year for a few events and did not come with the overhead of selling and tracking tickets. We hope by changing the focus of the social side of the club to in harbor events that we can attract a wider range of boaters to join the club.

Schedule:

Thursday May 1 - Executive Meeting

Saturday May 17 - Ice Breaker Social. Music man or band, social-like foods later in evening (no meal)
